The Oxford dictionary is over 100 years old. It was way back in 1857. The Philological society determined that current English-language dictionaries weren’t complete. They decided to completely re-examine the language. They had no idea what they had begun.

They toiled at this Oxford dictionary for forty years. Many new editors joined the project. Now the work had 10 volumes. It had over 400,000 entries. It was now the authority on everything having to do with the English language. 40 years later the initial mission was accomplished.

It wasn’t even in people’s hands before the editors began revising the Oxford dictionary. In 1933 a supplement was published in the dictionary had expanded to 12 volumes. This remained until 1957. That work went on until 1972 when four more volumes were added.

In 1982 the task of bringing the Oxford dictionary into the modern world began. It was all moved to an electronic format. They spent over 13 million dollars to make this happen. Five years later the task was finished. The electronic version led to a second edition published in 1989. It includes 20 volumes each with a little over 1000 pages.
